Job Description

About the role

As R&D Director you drive the further professionalization of the function and the ongoing product life cycle management. You are responsible for the R&D function with 80 Associates in Germany as well as external contractors in other countries and contributors across the BD network.

You will foster and support a culture of transparency and excellence with a key focus on developing the skills and capabilities of staff. As an R&D leader, the Director is expected to possess the business acumen required to communicate highly technical issues effectively to a non-technical audience.

Dual reporting to the VP R&D Medication Management Solutions (solid) and the VP&GM BD Rowa Technologies (dotted).

You will be responsible for:

  • Defining the R&D Strategy for BD Rowa in collaboration with all relevant stakeholders.
  • Establishing project success criteria including key milestones and R&D budgets ensuring on-time and on-budget delivery of new product development projects and sustaining activities.
  • Partnering with other business functions to manage risk and resolve project roadblocks, such as resource constraints, design trade-offs & communication issues.
  • Promoting the utilization of Design Excellence methodologies and drive continuous improvement in the ability to bring quality products to the market place.
  • Developing an agile operating model for R&D with the right degree of flexibility and business commitments
  • Creating strategies and objectives for the sub-functions and state of the art systems and processes to support the functional infrastructure.
  • Aligning activities and initiatives to support and enhance the objectives of the organization.
  • Building a diverse pipeline of talent by attracting, developing and promoting talent.


About you

Ideally you will have a University degree in Engineering or an equivalent qualification with at least 10 years of working experience in supervisory R&D Management. Experience with software solutions is desirable.

Additionally you will have:

  • Technical acumen for capital goods and software solutions.
  • A proven history of product development and product launching
  • Knowledge of or experience in utilizing Design Excellence.
  • An independent working style in a fast-paced environment.
  • Fluency in German and English, spoken and written.
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills.
  • Experience interfacing with Key Opinion Leaders.
  • Flexibility for up to 25% travel.
